the floral subject
My work with flowers is based on the teaching of renowned sensei, Akiko Otani, of Yokohama. I rely on importing the washi from Japan because it is perfect for Chigirie. The variety of washi available is remarkable. The range is from gossoma fine to a heavy paper with visible threads which are tricky to tear but enhance many subjects. Because we tear the paper 95% of the time, the soft edges add a vitality and a softness which is characteristic of the art form.
