painting the person
I began painting portraits when a friend asked me if I was going to paint a photo of Alexandra and Daisie which was sent me at the time of unusual snowfall in Wellington. I replied "No, I'm not." but that acted like a challenge I needed to face. I set about making a painting from the photo and enjoyed it very much. Not wanting to single out one grandchild for special attention, I invited the other five to send a favourite photo for me to have a go at painting from. I enjoyed the experience very much and felt I got to know my darlings even better by having studied their facial features so intensely. My method was to use a paint brush from the start, depending only on my painterly eye for direction with the results seen here.
